Most jobs do not need a certifier at all. Here is how to match the right tester to the work.
The LanSeeker Cable Tester (TP500C, $80.08) is a continuity and wiremap tester. It confirms that an RJ45 run is wired correctly with no opens, shorts, or miswires. It does not measure speed or length. It belongs in every installer's bag as a quick verification tool.
The VDV MapMaster 3.0 (T130, $168.14) adds cable mapping and basic fault location. It tests up to 16 cable runs using remote ID pods, which is useful when you need to identify and label multiple home runs without a helper at the other end.
The Digital Tone and Probe Kit (TDG310K1C, $202.66) is the industry-standard tracer. Use it to locate and identify cables in walls, above drop ceilings, and in crowded patch panels without a live network connection.
If the job needs proof of throughput or a TIA-568 certification report, that is a different class of instrument and not one we sell. Rent a certifier for the week on an occasional job, or price a subcontractor into the quote. Either way, the terminations it measures are the part you control, and they are the part that fails.

A cable tester checks for continuity and correct wiring order. A certifier runs a full suite of parametric tests including insertion loss, NEXT, and return loss and produces a pass/fail result against a specific TIA-568 performance level. Certification is required when a client or general contractor needs documented proof that an installation meets a rated standard.
Do I need a cable certifier for a residential or small commercial job?
For most residential and small commercial jobs, a wiremap tester and a tone and probe kit are sufficient. A certifier is typically required on commercial projects where the owner, IT department, or a warranty program (such as a manufacturer structured cabling warranty) mandates certified test results.
Do you sell a cable certifier?
No. Our testers cover the physical layer: continuity, wire map, length, distance to fault, and identification across multiple drops. Proving throughput takes a speed certifier and issuing a TIA-568 report takes a certification tester, and we sell neither. On an occasional job the normal route is renting one for the week. On a steady diet of certified drops it is a capital purchase from another supplier.
Can I use a tone and probe kit to find cables in a live patch panel?
Yes. The Digital Tone and Probe Kit (TDG310K1C) can be used on terminated, unplugged cable runs. You apply the tone at one end and use the probe to identify the cable at the other end, including tracing through walls and above ceiling tiles.
