What a bridle ring is for

A bridle ring is a ring on a threaded shank or a mount that holds a small bundle of cable along a wall, a beam or a ceiling. It is common for short drops, runs along walls, and small bundles where a J-hook is more than the job needs. For larger bundles running across a ceiling, a J-hook gives the cable a wider surface to rest on. Our J-hook buyer's guide covers those.

Our picks, and who each one is for

Bridle Ring, 2 in ID (JH808-100): the threaded ring

The Bridle Ring has a 2 inch inside diameter and a 1/4 x 20 thread. It comes 100 to a box, which suits a crew doing a whole floor. It fastens with its 1/4 x 20 thread.

Load rating: we do not quote one. Platinum's published specs give the thread and inside diameter, not a load.

Magnetic Bridle Ring, 2 in (JH808M-10): steel without drilling

The Magnetic Bridle Ring is a 2 inch ring on a magnet, sold 10 to a box. It is for steel beams, steel deck and steel equipment, where drilling is not allowed or not worth it.

What it does not do: it only holds to steel a magnet can grip. On wood, concrete or aluminum, use the threaded ring. Our magnetic vs mechanical bridle rings post compares the two in detail.

Magnet Mount (MAG420-10)

The Magnet Mount is a rare earth magnet mount with a 1/4-20 threaded socket for HPH J-hooks and bridle rings, 10 per box.

What it does not do: like the magnetic ring, it only holds to steel a magnet can grip.

Xtender Pole 12 ft (JH712)

If you set J-hooks and wire overhead from the floor, the Xtender Pole is a 12 ft, three-section pole for ceilings up to 18 ft. It is an overhead install pole, not a tool for fishing cable inside walls.

Using bridle rings and J-hooks on the same job

Most commercial jobs use both. A typical layout:

  • Main run across the ceiling: J-hooks, spaced along the path, carrying the full bundle. Our J-hook guide covers which hook to buy, and the spacing guide covers how far apart.
  • Branches to a room or a device: bridle rings, once the bundle has split down to a few cables.
  • Drops down a wall to an outlet, camera or access point: bridle rings, threaded where you can fasten, magnetic on steel.

Count each type separately when you order. Most J-hooks come 25 to a box, the threaded bridle ring 100 to a box, and the magnetic ring 10 to a box.

Bridle rings we do not sell

nVent Caddy and Minerallac make bridle rings that most electricians and low-voltage crews have seen. We do not sell them.

How to choose

  1. What are you fastening to? Steel you will not drill: the magnetic ring. Anything else: the threaded ring.
  2. How big is the bundle? Small bundles and drops: a 2 in bridle ring. Larger bundles across a ceiling: a J-hook.
  3. How many supports? The threaded ring comes 100 to a box, the magnetic ring 10 to a box.
  4. Permanent or temporary? A threaded ring stays where you put it. A magnetic ring can be moved, which also means it can be knocked loose.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bridle ring used for?

To hold a small bundle of low-voltage cable to a wall, beam or ceiling structure, often on short drops and runs along walls.

What size bridle ring do I need?

Pick a ring with room for the bundle plus cable added later. Both of our bridle rings are 2 inch. For a bundle larger than a 2 inch ring holds comfortably, use a J-hook.

What thread does the JH808-100 bridle ring use?

1/4 x 20.

How much weight can a bridle ring hold?

We do not quote one for our bridle rings. Platinum's published specs give the thread size and inside diameter, not a load. Keep bundles small and support them at regular spacing.

Bridle ring or J-hook?

Bridle rings for small bundles, drops and wall runs. J-hooks for larger bundles running across a ceiling. See our J-hook buyer's guide.
